ALABAMA JUMPSTART COALITION FOR PERSONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY WHO ARE WE? The Alabama Jump$tart Coalition is a non-profit organization with over 200 individuals and organizations representing business, government, education and financial organzations who have joined together to improve the personal financial literacy of Alabama's youth in grades K-16. Mission Statement: The Alabama Jump$tart Coalition seeks to increase financial literacy for all youth in Alabama by collaborating with other organizations in Alabama to promote financial literacy. Vision Statement: The Alabama Jump$tart Coalition envisions a time when all Alabama young people will be financially literate and equipped to achieve lifetime financial goals upon graduation from high school. The Alabama Jump$tart Coalition is a proud affiliate of the National Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. The National Jump$tart Coalition, based in Washington, D.C., was first convened in 1995 and consists of over 200 organizations committed to improving the financial literacy of America's youth. January 2008 (1/10/08)- Alabama Jump$tart members participate with the Literacy Council of Alabam's Literacy Task Force to address the needs of Alabama Citizens to read. The inability of youth and adults to read has a direct effect on the ability to achieve a higher earning potential in the workforce, successfully understand and handle personal and business financial matters, and to communicate in a global economy. January 2008 (1/29/08)- AJC members teach workshops at the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) event in partnership with the Alabama Securities Commission (ASC) at the REAL WORLD MONEY EXPERIENCE for all 10th grade students in Cherokee County at the First Baptist Church in Centre, Alabama. An estimated 327 students attended this one day event. February 2005 (2/15/08)- National Jump$tart High School Survey Alabama Jump$tart is proud to announce that eleven high schools in the State of Alabama signed up and participated with the National Financial Literacy Survey. State of Alabama and National Results are expected to be released in Washington, DC at a press conference held at the Federal Reserve Bank. ** Details will be listed in the AJC Times Newletter to be released in late February 2008** February 2008 (1/15/08)- ACES announces Baker High School in Mobile, Alabama will represent the State of Alabama at the National Life Smarts Competition. February 2008 (2/18/08)- FDIC conducts 2 sessions (morning and afternoon) on Money Smart (including a discussion about the soon to be released Money Smart for Young Adults curriculum) at the Lowndes County Public Schools Mega Professional Development Day at Central High School in Mosses, Alabama. February 2008 (2/20/08)- State Farm Southern Zone Youth Advisory Board. In 2006, State Farm created and implemented the Southern Zone Youth Advisory Board (SZYAB). This year's SZYAB is comprised of five high-performing students ages 17-20 from throughout the Southern Zone states. The SZYAB is charged with focusing on service-learning initiatives for the Southern Zone. This Board will help State Farm award service-learning grants to schools and organizations across the zone whose service-learning initiatives focus on financial education, workplace readiness and driver safety. Deadline: Advisory Board Membership Application due by May 16, 2008. Deadline: For Grant request to be considered they must be received and submitted electronically by May 31, 2008 dealine. **Please go to "About us" then "Downloads" on the Alabama Jump$tart website for more information. ** www.StateFarm.com ** February 2008 (2/28/08)- Auburn University will host a financial literacy workshop for all graduating seniors at 7:00 p.m. Alabama Jump$tart's President, Buffy Murphy, will be the speaker for this event. The workshop will be held in the Governor's Room at the Hotel at AU and Dixon Conference Center. Topic discussions will include student loan debt, post-graduate budgets, credit history, and what wise financial decisions to prepare for after graduation to help ensure a successful financial future. March 2008 (3/19/08)- The Alabama Cooperative Extension, the Alabama Securities Commission, and county school officials/teachers plan to conduct a Personal Finance and Investor Education event for over 400 high school students from various schools in the Etowah County area. Teachers and volunteers from the Alabama Jump$tart Coalition and local community will also provide instruction and support at this event. (details to follow) March 2008 (2/24/08)- Statewide DECA Conference will be held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Please take time this month to volunteer as a speaker in classrooms across Alabama. Alabama Jump$tart will present two ½ day workshops for all Administrators, Principals, and teachers in K-12th that attend the Alabama Department of Educations Mega Teachers Conference in Mobile, Alabama on July 15th and 16th. Location and time of the workshops will be available at registration July 2008 (7/22/08) Business/Marketing Education. ALabama Jump$tart will celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Day of Financial Literacy for all ACTE Business/Marketing Education Teachers in Alabama on Tuesday, July 22nd in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. Location and time of workshops and luncheon will be available at registration. October 2008 (10/08/08)- The National Council on Economic Education invites you to attend the 2008 Annual Conference of the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE), National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) and the Global Association of Teachers of Economics (GATE). This years conference will be hosted by the Mississippi Council on Economic Education. The 2008 Annual Conference will be held at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, Biloxi, Mississippi, October 8-11, 2008.
